Spring 2013 Conference
Be sure to register for our 5th annual Placemaking Conference scheduled for March 15th in Newburgh. This ½ day conference will focus on successes and challenges in creating great places in the Hudson Valley. Topics include farm markets, trails, healthcare, the arts, and managing aging infrastructure. We’ll also present our first annual Placemaking Awards. Citizens Foundation Partners with the Newburgh Armory Unity Center
The Citizens Foundation is pleased to announce that it will be conducting an evaluation and needs assessment of the Newburgh Armory Unity Center this spring to help this new nonprofit organization determine its long-term goals. Founded by long-time Newburgh resident and philanthropist Bill Kaplan and a dedicated Board of Directors, volunteer corps and executive director, the Center offers community groups a safe place to conduct sports, educational, arts, and other programming for children and adults. TZ Bridge Update
Construction of a new Tappan Zee Bridge remains a top issue for the Orange County Citizens Foundation. President Nancy Proyect recently attended an informational meeting in Tarrytown on the topic and will offer input on remaining mass transit options on February 22nd to a recently formed task force exploring short and long-term solutions to the transit issue. The Citizens Foundation had advocated for a more forward-thinking bridge design that would provide strong mass transit options in the first phase of construction. Citizens Foundation Presents 1st Annual Placemaking Awards |

Submit your nomination by email to nancy@occitizensfoundation.org by Friday, February 16th. Awards will be presented at the 5th Annual Placemaking Conference on Friday, March 15, 2013.
Nominees may be individuals, organizations, or projects from the public or private sector. Applications should be no longer than one-typed page. A project nomination must be a real place, not just a plan or program. A project nomination must have been in operation for a sufficient amount of time to demonstrate success.
There are no distinct categories. Nominations may include any type of place that makes a positive contribution to the built environment. Projects will be looked upon favorably if applicants can answer the following questions:
Is there a plan to engage youth?
Is there a plan to engage a diverse population?
Is this project accessible to all?
How did the organizers reach out to the community to develop the project? What groups/go ... |

Tom Weddell Receives 2012 Ruth and James Ottaway Medal |
|
The Orange County Citizens Foundation has announced that Newburgh resident Tom Weddell has been named the 2012 Ruth and James Ottaway Medal recipient. Mr. Weddell will be honored with the prestigious quality of life award at a dinner reception on April 26th in Central Valley. The public is invited to attend.
Mr. Weddell was born and raised in Orange County and is now the managing partner of the accounting firm Vanacore, DeBenedictus, DiGovanni and Weddell.
“Tom’s passion for Orange County has been a driving force in our community,” said Citizens Foundation Chairman Paul Ernenwein. “He always strive to improve quality of life Orange County and never shies away from the hard work necessary to get the job done.”
